Mill Valley Firebowl

Design around a central feature.

This project in Mill Valley transforms the outdoor living area with a blend of functional landscaping and unique design elements. Central to the project is an antique Indonesian Cane Bowl, originally utilized in Southeast Asia for sugar production. This cast iron piece adds a touch of history and can be employed for wood burning or retrofitted with a gas line for modern use. The property's original layout featured a back brick patio elevated above a lower yard area that dropped 13 inches. This design led to drainage challenges, with water pooling in the low-lying space. To address these issues, the lower area was raised to match the patio height by filling it with gravel, effectively eliminating the drainage problem.

To create a seamless connection between the two areas, two distinct patio designs were implemented. One features flagstone laid with grass in between, while the other utilizes gravel between the stones, offering a visual contrast. The patio showcases pre-cut flagstone sourced from India, mimicking the look of Arizona flagstone but with higher density. This characteristic makes the stones less susceptible to water absorption, cracking, and mildew, ensuring durability and longevity. A brick-surfaced bench with a stucco face enhances the area’s aesthetic appeal while providing a comfortable seating option. Recessed lighting in the design adds a modern touch, allowing the space to be enjoyed during the evening and providing a warm ambiance.

This project not only resolves functional issues but also elevates the overall design, creating a cohesive outdoor living space suitable for various activities.
